SHILLONG: As part of river clean up scheduled for very second and fourth Saturday, Operation Clean-Up will move towards Smit village and undertake a cleaning drive of the River Umiew on Saturday.
The River Umiew is the source of water for residents of Shillong.  This is the 9th phase of Operation Clean-Up since it first started on August 8, 2019 as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebration of The Shillong Times.
Several educational institutions have joined hands with Operation Clean-Up. They include Women’s College, Kiddies Corner, St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Martin Luther Christian University amongst others.
Other environmentally conscious groups like MakeSomeoneSmile and The Green Signal are integral members of Operation Clean-Up.
However, the most persistent group is that of Team Jiva and City Hut Dhaba which regularly conduct cleaning drives in and around Shillong and beyond.
The objective of the cleaning drive is to try and restore the dignity and cleanliness of Shillong City and to take this message beyond the state capital to other districts.
All those who wish to volunteer for this cleaning drive are requested to arrive at Smit market at 8.30 am with their cleaning implements.
