Nongpoh/ Mawkyrwat/ NONGSTOIN: The 11-hour bandh call by NESO received support from the people of Nongpoh, Mawkyrwat and Nongstoin where burning of tyres and rally were reported in some districts.
In Ri Bhoi District, business establishments, offices and the busy National Highway-6 wore a deserted look while South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo informed that the district recorded a thin attendance of government employees. She also informed that no untoward incidents were reported from within the district which wore a deserted look on Tuesday.
Reports of tyres being burned at several parts of Ri Bhoi were also reported while students of USTM, RIST and other educational institutions were seen protesting with placard during bandh hours in their respective institutions.
In Bhoirymbong, villagers along with children were seen holding placards expressing their strong support to the NESO in protest against the CAB. Similar protests were also held near NESAC, NERIE and other parts of the District being led by NGO members and the public.
In Nongstoin, institutions, offices and shops were shut during the bandh while protesters burnt tires and blocked the road in some part of the district. The bandh also affected rural areas where some offices in Nongstoin were asked by NGOs to close down and to cooperate with the bandh.
Protestors also resorted to scribbling on the walls of central office buildings in Nongstoin as a mark of protest over CAB.
Meanwhile, the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (CoMSO) organised a rally at Nongstoin where several NGOs came out on the street and shouted slogans against the Center.
They also burnt effigies of the Prime Minister, Home minister, Agatha Sangma and Meghalaya Governor.
Addressing the protesters, D Sunn, president of the West Khasi Students’ Union (WKSU) slammed Agatha Sangma for supporting the bill.
He also expressed unhappiness over the decision of Agatha over the fact that she did not consult nor took the view of the people of the state.
