SHILLONG: Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Latiplang Kharkongor said the Council is waiting for the ruling of the High Court on the issue of Executive Committee (EC).
The KHADC is presently functioning without an EC.
Kharkongor, who is heading the United Democratic Front (UDF) coalition, has filed a petition before the court over the delay in approval of the list of EMs.
After hearing the petition, the court issued notice to the Governor’s Secretariat and the state government. The petition of the CEM assumes significance as the government had rejected his election though the governor had approved it.
The list has Independent MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri as Deputy CEM who had recently extended support to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Others in the list of EMs are Congress MDCs Ronnie Lyngdoh and Lamphrang Blah, NPP MDC Mitchell Wankhar and PDF MDC Macdalyn Sawkmie. The list of EMs was sent on November 27.
Kharkongor told The Shillong Times that the Council is waiting for the ruling from the court and then will subsequently wait for the approval from the governor.
He asserted that the Council has no link with the state government. “We have nothing to do with the state government”, he remarked.
As for claims that the UDF is in minority, Kharkongor said that the UDA should prove its majority on the floor of the House.
