Shillong: The residents of Mawiong-Mawpdang Raid in Mawdiangdiang organised a public rally to protest against the high-handedness of the Sordar of Shnat Raid Mawpdang, Raid Nongkrem who allegedly sold 100 acres of land belonging to the Raid to some businessmen.

The local residents also decided to file a complaint to the Syiem of Hima Khyrim and the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills urging them to immediately halt the move taken by the Sordar.

“This land belongs to the Raid and has been used by the people of this area for many years for various purposes including agricultural activities,” Rangbah Shnong of Raid Mawiong Richard Kharumnuid said.

The Rangbah Shnong alleged that the Sordar of Shnat raid had forcefully attempted to sell the land measuring about 100 acres to some rich businessmen near Mawiong and Sohlaper village.

“Soon after the matter came to light, the executive committee of the Dorbar Shnong sent a letter to the Sordar of Shnat Raid to immediately stop the process but bypassing the direction of the EC, the Sordar went ahead with his plan”, Kharumnuid alleged.

He also mentioned that the same has been apprised to the Lyngdoh (traditional-heads) of Khyrim, Smit but nothing has materials yet.

The Dorbar Shnong has formed a special committee to seek protection and support on the matter,” the Rangbah Shnong said.

The meeting was also attended by KSU members who extended their support to the villagers in their move to prevent the land from being sold off by the Sordar.
