LONDON: Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher could be this Formula 1 season’s eighth winner in eight races at the upcoming European Grand Prix, according to team boss, Ross Brawn.

Speaking on the team’s Youtube channel, Brawn said, “There’s every opportunity that at the next race in Valencia we’re going to have an eighth winner.”

Schumacher has been the victim of a run of bad luck and has only finished two of the races so far, and both of those in 10th position; he has not finished in the last three races.

Brawn believes that the team will be successful at Valencia and that this is Mercedes’ opportunity.

He added: “I expect Valencia to be a reasonably good track for us and I expect us to be competitive as we have been in most of the races this season.”

Brawn termed the reliablity issues that have plagued Schumacher’s car this year as frustrating.

“It’s peculiar: we have had one car do every lap of every race and one with so many problems.”

Despite a win for Nico Rosberg in China – the team’s first in its new incarnation – Brawn still feels that Mercedes have yet to fulfill their potential.

Focusing on Rosberg, who is just 21 points behind Lewis Hamilton in the championship, Brawn said he believed the young German could still win the world title this season.

“Nico is driving very well, the car is extremely competitive and he is one race win away from leading the world championship.

“We just have to fight with everything we have to achieve the best results we can and see what evolves, but there is no reason why not.” (Agencies)
