LONDON: Andy Murray, ranked number four in the world of tennis would have won several grand slam titles if only he had played during a different time, Andre Agassi believes.
Having to compete with players of the quality of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic has left him without a trophy from one of the majors.
Speaking in a radio interview, Agassi, who won eight slams, said, “In any other generation he would have multiple slams and if he was in my generation I would have a lot less.
“I believe there is so much more he can accomplish in this game,” adding that he really trusts in Murray’s potential and believes that he will win given his commitment.
The Scottish player has reached three major finals, but has never been able to win. With legendary Ivan Lendl as coach, he will hope to change that and Agassi thinks it a positive move for Murray to have the Czech’s guidance on hand.
Agassi retired after the 2006 US Open at 36 years of age and has since seen both Federer and Nadal join him in completing a career grand slam, while Djokovic was on course for doing the same before falling at the recent French Open final.
“I think we’ll look back and see this as a real golden era of tennis,” he said.
“The top three in the world winning so many of the Grand Slams is remarkable.” (Agencies)
