Guwahati: Assam’s main opposition party, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has decided to support the candidature of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma for the presidential elections, a senior party leader told IANS Saturday.

“The party had decided to support Sangma unanimously as he represents the northeast, he is an independent candidate and he is a tribal candidate. We have never supported any presidential candidate who was supported by the Congress in the past. So we have decided to support Sangma,” said senior party leader Apurba Bhattacharjee.

The party had taken the decision at an executive committee meeting held at the party headquarters here Friday evening, he said.

“P.A. Sangma is the most ideal candidate for the presidential election. He had diverse experience -as the Speaker of Lok Sabha, as a Union Minister and he is the most prominent tribal political leader of the country,” said Bhattacharjee.

The AGP has three MPs and ten MLAs. Assam’s biggest regional party had earlier hinted about supporting a candidate from northeastern region in the race for Raisina Hill. (IANS)
