TURA: Revealing illegal transportation of coal taking place in Garo Hills, several organisations from Adokgre area in North Garo Hills on Wednesday strongly objected to the region being used as a transit point and demanded that the illegal activity is put to a stop immediately.
Organisations like the Sorder Association Adokgre Area, local unit of GSMC, Hills Union of Farmers and Producers (HUFP) and the Adokgre Farmers’ Union in a meeting condemned the illegal activity where they also resolved to take measures to stop the same.
According to the organisations, coal, which is brought from the Khasi Hills areas, is being transported illegally to Assam through the Mangsang-Adokgre road. The organisations fear that continued use of the road to transport heavy loads of coal will soon result in damage to the same.
“We oppose the plying of illegal coal trucks through the area’s roads. Concerned authorities must take notice and put a stop to it immediately. We will not be silent spectators and take steps on our own if nothing is done to stop the same,” the organisations said.
During Wednesday’s protest, members of the organisations held placards and posters with relevant messages to show their opposition to the illegal coal transport.
