SHILLONG: Referring to the Tablighi Jamaat meet in Nizamuddin, New Delhi, which has led to a surge in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) central body said that the state government should adopt stringent measures with regard to entry of people to the state.
In a statement issued here, the general secretary of the union, Donald Thabah, while stating that 5 persons from Meghalaya and 216 persons from Assam took part at the Nizamuddin Jamaat, said that stringent checking and screening should be carried out for people entering Meghalaya.
“The union has demanded that the state government should closely monitor the entry of people into the state to contain the spread of the virus. As people from Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi use Meghalaya as a transit route”, Thabah said.
The general secretary of the union said that people who were at Nizamuddin should not be allowed to enter East Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi.
He further asked the Dorbar Shnong in border areas to shut down their respective areas to ensure that the virus is not spread.
Moreover, he said that several ambulances from the three districts of Assam — Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi — would arrive in NEIGRIHMS during midnight.
He suggested that the residents from the three districts should instead opt for treatment in Silchar Medical College and refrain from entering Meghalaya.
