JOWAI: The West Jaintia Hills District Magistrate has issued an order instructing all principal employers, including contractors and managers, to pay full salary to all inter-state migrant workers in the district as they have to stay at home during the lockdown period imposed throughout the country while trying to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. The order came on the heels of a Supreme Court notice on unorganised labour payments. The district magistrate sought the co-operation of employers in ensuring compliance as protection of lives is the prime duty and no one should suffer from hunger in collective fight against the current situation.
Further the letter stated that house owners should desist from charging rent for one month from labourers and other workers living as tenants under them.
