Groups donate to CM’s relief fund

SHILLONG/ JOWAI: In response to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s appeal to contribute to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, many organisations have come forward to lend a helping hand in the fight against the pandemic.
The Ferndale Apartments Society, Shillong, has contributed Rs 2.11 lakh. “We appeal and encourage all citizens of the state to come together in this hour of crisis,” Donkupar Syiem, president, Ferndale Apartments Society, said in a statement issued here.
Meanwhile, the Jaintia Hills Development Society (JHDS), together with the Jowai Diocese donated Rs 3 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund on Monday.
The Bishop Jowai Diocese, Vector Lyngdoh and Director of JHDS, Fr. Manbha Pakem and Denis Kurkalang handed over a cheque to the chief minister at his office chamber.
Further, the bishop informed the chief minister that around 18 Catholic Schools and Hostels located in East and West Jaintia Hills are ready to be handed to the state government to be used as quarantine or isolation centre.
Further, the Bishop committed to Sangma that the Jowai Diocese will donate 10,000 home-made face masks made by sisters from various convents in Jaintia Hills.
The Bishop also greeted all believers and urged them to cooperate with the government in an attempt to fight against the deadly coronavirus.
Youth contribution
Testifying the significance of the saying ‘Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders’, the Rotaract Club of Pine city Shillong, RID 3240, the youth wing of the Rotary Club of Shillong, collectively donated a sum of Rs 7,000 to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund on April 4 as their contribution to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, the club, in collaboration with “Project Face Mask”, a volunteer group, on Tuesday, handed over 500 pieces of face mask to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Jowai, West Jaintia hills who, along with other officials, will distribute the same among the needy.
