SHILLONG: Farmers in the state are struggling to make ends meet as they complained that they are not getting fertilisers amid the ongoing lockdown.
A farmer from Smit, N Nongdhar, said, “We are finding it difficult to get fertilisers and the crops will not grow well without it.”
Preparing a plot of land for cultivating potato along with his three sons, Nongdhar said a sack of urea was selling for Rs 600 per sack while the original price is Rs 250 per sack.
“It would be impossible to farm without urea as the soil is not fertile as it used to be”, he said.
Nongdhar, who has taken the land on lease, said that a lot has to be done to make farming a profitable venture. He has to pay labourers Rs 400 – Rs 450 each.
It may be mentioned that many farmers in Sohryngkham have also expressed concern on not getting fertilisers and manure.
