SHILLONG: Six people who had gone to Shillong Civil Hospital on Tuesday to register themselves as ‘contacts’, were allegedly denied permission to enter the premises by the hospital authorities.
The six persons, including five medical workers and a woman employed as a maid in the residence of Dr John L Sailo Ryntathiang, were earlier denied entry into Smit area despite being residents.
Finding no alternative, the six people went to the civil hospital but were made to wait for hours without food.
Their ordeal came to an end only after a Good Samaritan, Michael Kharsyntiew, intervened on their behalf and contacted Nongkrem MLA Lambor Malngiang who rushed to the spot within an hour. The staff at the civil hospital allowed them in only after the legislator’s intervention.
Narrating the incident, Kharsyntiew said he runs a canteen at Dr. H. Gordon Roberts Hospital and has been providing food packets to needy people.
He stated that he got a call from the Rangbah Shnong of Riatsamthiah on Tuesday night, asking him to arrange food packets for some of his relatives at the civil hospital.
When Kharsyntiew arrived at the hospital around midnight, he noticed five females and a male waiting outside the hospital building since morning without food.
On learning of their plight, he contacted the MLA who reached the hospital and made arrangements for the six people to be allowed into the hospital.
