TURA: Heavy rains that have lashed the Garo Hills region since last week has caused water levels to rise leading to road damages specially in the plain belt areas.

The water level from the Jinjiram and Ganol rivers rose above the danger mark at many places beginning from Garobadha all the way upto Rajabala and Phulbari.

An entire stretch of the road from Garobadha to Selsella via Balachanda experienced mud slips at three different locations leading to closure of the road for maintenance work. Many crops were inundated by the rising water levels and it has only been since Wednesday afternoon that the danger level in the river waters have dropped. Garo Hills has been witnessing unprecedented rainfall since the last two months which has given a boost to the rivers and water reservoirs underground.

“This has been the highest rainfall experienced in Garo Hills in the last four years,” remarked deputy commissioner Parvin Bakshi.
