SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said on Monday that Mawmluh-Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL) has long been suffering from a “virus” and even Directorate of Health Services cannot save it.
The MCCL has not resumed work while other cement companies are functioning during the lockdown.
Coal from Assam was also transported to cement companies in East Jaintia Hills.
Tynsong told reporters, “MCCL is more or less defunct”.
He added that the government will soon take a call on what needs to be done with the company.
While there is no such plan to close down the company, he said that the government will decide on the matter as the MCCL has been running in loss.
Earlier on May 11, the Mawmluh Sirdarship had held a meeting to deliberate on the continued closure of MCCL since the commencement of the nationwide lockdown.
The Mawmluh Durbar had stated that the MCCL management is reluctant to resume business even after the state government allowed private cement factories to resume operation.
The state government is also facing a barrage of criticism for permitting cement plants in East Jaintia Hills to transport coal from Assam.
