SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday claimed that a majority of migrant workers stranded in the state due to the COVID-19 lockdown have now been engaged in construction activities as permitted by the government.
Speaking to media persons here, Sangma said that if migrant workers wish to return to their native states, the government has made arrangements to transport them to their respective states.
“Economic activities in most of the districts have been allowed to resume and so most migrant workers are now engaged”, he said.
Sangma said buses which arrive in the state bringing back citizens from other parts of the country are being used to ferry the migrant workers to their respective places.
“We have buses coming from states like West Bengal; we send migrant workers back in the same buses”, he added.
The chief minister also informed that in some cases employers have made their own arrangements for transportation of their employees to their respective states.
He asserted that the state government would make arrangements to transport migrant workers out of the state and provide other necessary assistance for those who wish to go back to their respective states.
