New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued a notice to the Assam government and sought a detailed report on the July violence in Kokrajhar district and would send a team to study relief and rehabilitation measures in the affected districts.

In a letter, the Commission has asked the chief secretary to inform about the arrangements made for relief and rehabilitation of the affected people and the financial assistance given to the victims.

He also asked the secretary N K Das for a detailed report on the violence in and around Kokrajhar district of Assam within three weeks.

The Chief Secretary has been specifically asked to inform about the arrangements made for relief and rehabilitation of the affected people and the financial assistance given to the victims, an NHRC spokesperson said.

The NHRC has also decided to send its own team to study the arrangements made by the state government for rehabilitation of the persons affected by the violence.

The team has been given four weeks time to submit a report to the Commission, the spokesperson said.

Over 56 people were killed in the ethnic violence in Assam even as thousands have been rendered homeless with most of them taking shelter in government-run relief camps. (Agencies)
