Woman saves brother’s life by donating kidney
New Delhi: On Raksha Bandhan day, it is traditionally the brothers who shower presents on their sisters but 34-year-old Asha chose to give a priceless gift to her sibling who was battling for his life– one of her kidneys.
42-year-old Sriniwas Thakur, a resident of Faridabad, was suffering from high blood pressure for a long time and was admitted to Asian Institute of Medical Sciences here.
Doctors diagnosed that he had kidney failure. When doctors decided to go for a kidney transplant, Asha was more than willing to donate her kidney to her brother and the operation was undertaken on Thursday.
“Both the recipient and donor are doing fine and are on the road to recovery. Asha gave her elder brother a new lease of life by donating her kidney, a vital organ,” a statement from the hospital said.
Speaking on the occasion said Dr N K Pandey, Chairman & MD, Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, said: “If discovered early before significant kidney damage has occurred the disease is curable and reversible. But when kidney damage is advanced then the only available options are long term dialysis or kidney transplant.” (PTI)
