SHILLONG: The city came under a blanket of darkness on Wednesday night when the electricity was cut for over 2 hours from 9.30 pm to nearly 12 midnight, leaving citizens in a dilemma.
The phenomenon was quite a shocker as the city neither witnessed a storm nor any such electricity-disrupting circumstances besides moderate rain.
On enquiring with the Meghalaya Electricity Corporation Limited (MeECL) about the power cut, an official, who was initially was clueless about the incident, said that she was informed that “branches of trees had fallen on the lines which then caused it to trip”.
“A pine tree fell on the 33KV Mawlai-Kench’s-Nongthymmai power line inside the complex of 119 Territorial Army in Lawsohtun,” the official said, adding that the said line was shut down as an emergency step.
However, of late, the public have been witnessing abrupt power cuts during random hours of days in the city.
