World Indigenous Day celebration in Tura on Aug 9

 TURA: With the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People round the corner, the A’chik Indigenous Forum (AIF) has announced that it would celebrate the Day on August 9.

AIF informed that the celebration of will be held at SMELC (IFAD) conference hall at Dakopgre Tura from 11:30 am.

Stating that there are more than 370 million indigenous people in the world and the A’chik people are one amongst them, president of AIF Sengrak D Marak said, “It is only fitting that together with the rest of the world the A’chik people also celebrate this auspicious day.”

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous People was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994 to be celebrated every year during the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People (1995-2004). In 2004, the Assembly proclaimed a second International Decade, from 2005-20015, with the theme of ‘A Decade for Action and Dignity’ and since then indigenous people all over the world have been celebrating World Indigenous Day on August 9 every year.
