SHILLONG: After much dilly-dally and tug-of-war within UDP over allotment of ticket for Nongthymmai constituency, Latiplang Kharkongor, who is backed by working president Paul Lyngdoh, is now ahead in the battle for ticket.
Kharkongor, a former KHNAM member and an MDC from Nongthymmai, is up against Dr Jemino Mawthoh, who had earlier left the UDP to join the NCP only to return to the fold.
While admitting that there is still resistance from the group belonging to another working president Bindo M Lanong, which is backing Dr Mawthoh, party sources said that majority of the leaders are in favour of Kharkongor.
“There are strong possibilities an official announcement would be made much ahead of the 10-day deadline set by the party to take a final call on the allotment of ticket for Nongthymmai constituency,” sources said.
The party’s State Election Committee (SEC) had earlier asked the party president Dr Donkupar Roy and two working presidents Paul Lyngdoh and Bindo M Lanong to take a final call on the issue.
There were also reports of the UDP adopting double standards while allotting party tickets for the upcoming election with leaders of the KHNAM, which had merged with the UDP, being overlooked by the party.
Among the sitting UDP MDCs who have been allotted the party ticket to contest the upcoming Assembly election are Embhah Syiemlieh (MDC from Mawlai constituency) and Titos Chyne (MDC from Sohra).
