NONGSTOIN: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) West Khasi Hills District Unit, after receiving inputs about illegal activities of some truck drivers of Food Corporation of India (FCI) on the Nongstoin By-pass, caught some truck drivers selling rice at Sawlad junction in Mawrusyiar.
The truck drivers sold the rice before reaching the FCI stock in Pyndengrei, Nongstoin.
The union said that it had received complaints earlier, however, on this instance, it caught the culprits red-handed.
The union had learned that the truck drivers, who come from Assam to FCI Nongstoin, stop at Sawlad junction in Mawrusyiar village and illegally sell rice at an exorbitant price.
With the help of FCI Nongstoin manager Pyndengrei Nongstoin, the union has apprehended driver Mohammad Ali who drives the truck (AS 01 KC-5253) owned by Zazar Alam of Boko, Kamrup district, Assam.
Under apprehensions that the needy were sold the rice at higher price, the union took the matter up with the West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, T Lyngwa. The DC assured to conduct an inquiry into the matter.
Sources informed that the truck drivers conducted such illegal activities in other areas as well.
On the other hand, the union accused the FCI drivers and handymen of flouting COVID-19 norms.
They did not even wear masks, the union said. The trucks were not sanitised despite arriving from a containment zone area in Assam, it added.
