SHILLONG: A five-day Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Assembly has been summoned from September 5 next in what is likely to be the virtual last for the current House whose term is due to end in March next year.

Official sources said that the session, which is a Constitutional formality, may have only three working days.

With the politicos already in an election overdrive, there may not be many takers for a long session.

However, it is expected that the Opposition NCP, somewhat deflated after the drama over PA Sangma’s political micalculation, will fire all cylinders in order to win some brownie points as a prelude to the State elections.

The Autumn Session will witness two significant alterations in the House — the absence of PA Sangma (who has resigned from the House prior to fighting the Presidential election) and the new avatar for Manas Chaudhuri (who has joined the ruling MUA as an Associate Member of the CLP).

Informed sources said that barring an early election, the House may meet in December for a day primarily to bid farewell to all the Members of the Eighth Assembly of the State.
