TURA: Raising questions on the work ethics of certain law enforcing agencies in Garo Hills, a complaint was recently submitted to the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner against the Meghalaya Police and CRPF and Army personnel operating in and around Dadenggre and Tikrikilla, for human rights violations.

According to sources, the Meghalaya police along with the CRPF in the name of SWAT/CoBRA have spread a wave of fear psychosis among the general public of Dadenggre and Tikrikilla area with their heavy-handed overbearing ways.

It has been alleged that the security forces are randomly picking up innocent villagers, not even sparing the women and children, and release them after a night or two after physically and mentally torturing them on the pretext of interrogation. This act of interrogating villagers who have committed no offence is a cruel ploy being used by the security forces to get information about the movements of militant outfits in the area, it was alleged.

Specifying on such police atrocities sources informed that on August 5 the father-in-law of a suspected linkman of a militant outfit, Jinen Marak, was picked up by the police and brought back the next morning. The police then stationed in the village the whole day and asked a lady to cook and serve them food in her house, laying an unnecessary burden on the poor woman.

Sources also added that towards the evening the security forces started torturing the villagers one by one including several women and a 14-year-old boy.
