GUWAHATI: Two more persons were swept away by floodwaters in Assam with the situation apparently easing to an extent with less rainfall, even as 10.75 lakh people remain affected in 18 districts of the state.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority bulletin on Saturday evening informed that one person died under Mayong revenue circle of Morigaon district while the other casualty was reported from Doomdooma revenue circle of Tinsukia district.
The overall death toll in the first wave of floods has now risen to 37.
It may be noted that Prime Minister Narenda Modi had called Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday and assured all help to tackle the flood situation.
The Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of persons who lost their lives in the deluge.
As many as 6.32lakh people are still affected in Barpeta district alone while close to two lakh people remain affected in South Salmara district.
Currently, 6531 people are taking shelter in 171 relief camps/centres set up across 16 districts.
The Brahmaputra is flowing above danger level at Neamatighat (Jorhat) and Dhubri district while Jia Bharali in Sonitpur and Kopili in Nagaon district too are flowing above danger level.
Currently, 32 of the 223 camps opened for sheltering animals at Kaziranga National Park are affected by the flood while six camps had to be vacated.
About 44 animals have been affected by the deluge and vehicles plying on the highway, the divisional forest officer, Eastern Assam wildlife division, informed.
