NONGPOH: In the wake of an Assam-based news channel alleging extortion and passing derogatory remarks against a Meghalaya cop, the latter has filed a complaint at Umiam Police Station stating that the allegations are “baseless”.
The officer in-charge of Umroi PIC, Amit Sinha, has filed a complaint on Monday against the Assam Talk News Channel and Hiran Ali, from Bura Gaon in Assam, owner of Seema Travels for alleging extortion, passing derogatory remarks and gestures in a news item aired by the channel.
The video was against the police personnel of Umroi PIC who had conducted checking of illegal transportation of coal at Lumdiengngan in Ri Bhoi.
As per the complaint, Sinha said the channel, in conspiracy with one, Ali, owner of a passenger vehicle bus, had levelled baseless allegation on July 2 against the former.
“The media house, in their video news report and in conspiracy with Ali, had violated my privacy and acted in complete defiance of law by airing my photograph without my consent or my department’s approval,” a statement issued on Tuesday said.
The statement accused the channel of tarnishing the image of Meghalaya Police and at the same time making baseless allegations.
“This unlawful act of the media house, in connivance with Hiran Ali, amounts to criminal intimidation, harassment, defamation and using extortionist methods in order to prevent me from discharging my duty as a public servant,” the statement added.
Sinha said that one passenger bus bearing (AS-01-GC-3886) was detained by police personnel of Umroi PIC on June 4 which carrying 122 sacks of areca nut that belonged to Ali.
The bus, which was plying without any valid permit and GST challan, was then detained for illegally transporting goods without necessary permit.
Sinha has also called for a proper probe to unearth the racket of illegal transportation of areca nut.
