Assam flood toll rises to 40

GUWAHATI: One drowning death was reported from Barpeta district even as the flood scene in Assam continued to improve considerably with relatively less rainfall over the past few days.

With the latest casualty, the overall death toll in the first wave of floods has gone up to 40, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority bulletin reported on Wednesday evening.

Number of people affected by the deluge too has declined substantially over the past week to about 1.70 lakh in 12 districts.

The affected districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Charaideo, Biswanath, Chirang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Goalpara, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat and Tinsukia.

As on date, 1095 people are taking shelter in relief camps/centres in three districts.

Till Wednesday morning, the Brahmaputra at Neamatighat (Jorhat) and Dhubri district, Disang in Sivasagar, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur and Dhansiri in Golaghat were flowing above danger level.

The situation at Kaziranga National Park too has improved over the past few days with only 13 of the 223 camps opened for sheltering animals remaining affected by the deluge, the divisional forest officer, Eastern Assam wildlife division, informed.

However, out of 25 camps opened at Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary, 24 camps remain affected by the deluge.
