AHRC seeks report on COVID scene in Assam prisons

GUWAHATI: The Assam Human Rights Commission has, in the wake of the spike in COVID cases, directed the state government to submit a report on the condition of inmates lodged in prisons, by August 5 next.

The commission has taken cognizance of a complaint made by the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia regarding “gross negligence in providing necessary healthcare and diet to the inmates of Guwahati Central Jail and other jails of the state along with general non-compliance with COVID-19 protocols.”

“The commission ordered the state chief secretary and inspector general (prisons) to submit a report in this connection to the commission on or before August 5,” a statement issued here on Tuesday, said.

The order was passed on Monday by Justice T. Vaiphei, chairperson of AHRC, and members Naba Kamal Bora and Deva Kumar Saikia.

The Opposition leader had lodged his complaint with the commission on July 14, 2020.
