NONGSTOIN: The Sordar of Lawrapha village said that many paddy fields in the village have been eroded and destroyed due to incessant rains in the last few days.
In a recent meeting with Nongstoin MLA Macmillan Byrsat, the Sordar, Dermostar Lyngdoh Nonglait, informed the legislator that 95 per cent of the residents in Lawrapha and other adjoining villages depend mostly on agricultural products for income.
He requested the MLA to take up the issue with the concerned department with the aim of protecting the paddy fields from further deterioration in case of heavy rains in the coming days.
The MLA and sordar along with other village heads inspected the spot where the paddy fields were destroyed.
After ascertaining the root cause, it was discerned that the soil erosion had occurred because of the swollen Umnamlang river which had flown to the paddy fields along the river bank.
Byrsat had, on Monday, shot a letter to the Executive Engineer (EE) of the Water Resource department asking the official to take necessary action to improve the situation.
