Shillong: The breakaway faction of the ANVC on Monday raised concern over the problem of influx in the State while pressing on the need to introduce the Inner Line Permit (ILP) or any similar system to check the flow of outsiders into the State.
In a statement issued here on Monday, the ANVC (B) stated that being a Sixth Schedule State, there seems to be a conflict between the State and the District Councils in exercising the powers bestowed upon each due to political obligations.
“The population rate in most of the district rose at an alarming rate, especially in Garo Hills and this is due to the slackness of the concerned authorities to check illegal migrants, infiltrators and influx,” the statement mentioned.
Stating that population growth in the State was alarming the ANVC (B) said Meghalaya is demographically very vulnerable and easily accessible from both sides – Bangladesh on one side and Assam on the other.
“There is a need for the concerned authorities to check influx or else we will soon lose our status in our own State,” the statement added.
