Agartala: Northeast Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO) Chairman and Managing Director P C Pankaj on Saturday asserted that they would add at least another 950 MW power to it’s present generation of 1130 MW per day by next five years.
Talking to reporters here after holding a meeting with Chief Minister Manik Sarkar Mr Pankaj said, NEEPCO had proposed to the state government that it would go for more power generation activity in any part of Tripura if Oil Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) or Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) supplied natural gas.
‘I have spoken to the CMDs of both ONGC and GAIL, besides the chief minister, over the issue because we have the investment capacity. But it cannot materialise unless we get necessary supply of gas,’ Mr Pankaj pointed out. He added that NEEPCO would soon go for open tender with any private party in power sector investment at any part of northeast.
He stated that 70 per cent of households in the region had been provided power by NEEPCO and they were in the process of enhancing both generation and distribution to a large extent in coming years utilising abundance of natural resources like water, gas and coal in the region.
He stated that 104 MW capacity combine cycle power plant in Monarchak in bordering West Tripura had been progressing well and is scheduled to be commissioned by July 2013, while the 46 MW extension project at Agartala Gas Turbine would be commissioned right on time.
Mr Pankaj has also contemplated erecting trans-boundary power transmission line of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) through Bangladesh to evacuate power mostly from southern parts of northeast, especially from Tripura. (UNI)
