SHILLONG: Stating that famers have already incurred huge losses owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the president of Hill Farmers’ Union (HFU) Commander Shangpliang has suggested that the state government should open more border markets across the international border for the benefit of the farmers, especially for those residing along the border areas.
Shangpliang has also extended support to the Meghalaya International Exporters Chamber of Commerce (MIECC) to export perishable commodities from Dawki Land Custom station.
In a statement issued here, he said, “If other land custom station started functioning for export why not Dawki? If the export is open there will be extra demand for our perishables and if the demand is more, we will get the better price, and as long as the farmers benefit, we will support the demand to resume export”.
He further demanded that vegetables such as tomato, squash, ginger and others perishables should be exported to Bangladesh.
He said that the union is ready to coordinate with the MIECC for better market linkage and for the overall welfare of the farmers in the state.
