TURA: The Political Science department of Don Bosco College, Tura, recently organised a webinar for the students who aspire to become journalists.
Media, considered to be the fourth pillar of democracy, has been playing an imperative role for decades to give a voice to public opinion and uphold people’s rights whenever attempts have been to subjugate free speech.
During the webinar, former deputy editor of The Telegraph, Sumit Dasgupta, was the resource person.
Ipshita Roy, HOD of Don Bosco College, Tura, convened the interaction with a set of questions, to which Dasgupta responded by highlighting that an aspiring journalist ought to be a good communicator and a storyteller.
Encouraging the bright young minds, he said, “You must be prepared to be multi-skilled, have an eye for news and events, and be open to creating content for any medium. One should always try and start early video-capturing or writing stories from areas of personal interest or highlighting some hyperlocal issues of public interest.”
With the growing popularity of digital platforms, there is ample scope in content-writing for OTT players like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hotstar, which, Dasgupta said, would be recruiting far more writers than newspapers would.
Don Bosco College Principal, Fr. Bivan Rodrigues Mukhim, also highlighted the most crucial factor of journalism, which is disseminating correct information among the masses.
Participants at the webinar also threw several questions on journalism, making the event an enriching and informative session.
