SHILLONG: Taking strong cognizance of the side business being carried out by middlemen or dalals at the District Transport Office (DTO), the Transport department has decided to come up with a system where people can apply for driving license online.

Many applicants who want to apply for a driving license in the city end up paying exorbitantly to middlemen or ‘dalals’ who charge as high as Rs 5000 for delivering the license within a month’s time. “We have already started the Sarathi software and very soon the people can apply online for the license,” Transport Minister AT Mondal said on Tuesday. According to Mondal, once the online system is initiated, things would be streamlined putting an end to the role of the middlemen.

All defects will be cleared as inappropriate and wrong data will be not be accepted in the online system,” Mondal added. The Minister also issued a strong warning to all the middlemen, who are indulging in the illegal business while asserting that strict action will be taken if they are caught.
