Dhubri clash: Police fire in air after desecration, 2 injured

Dhubri: The police fired in the air on Saturday to disperse a mob protesting against the desecration of a place of worship in Assam’s Dhubri district, as two persons were injured in a clash subsequently.

Police fired six rounds in the air at R K Mission Road after local people blocked the road protesting the desecration of the place of worship and theft of Rs two lakh in ornaments last night when the town was under night curfew, official sources said.

In a clash between supporters of a spontaneous bandh and shop keepers following the blockade, one each from either side were seriously injured, the sources said.

The town, however, later observed a spontaneous bandh with markets, shops, business establishments, offices, educational institutions and banks closing down, they said.

The local people demanded that the culprits responsible for the desecration be arrested within a day. The army flagmarched Dhubri town thrice where Rapid Action Force, CRPF and the police were deployed.

The district administration advanced the night curfew to 7:00 pm from 10:00 pm in the Dhubri police station area in view of tension. Night curfew from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am has been on since violence broke out in lower Assam last month.
