TURA: The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) has intimated Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma of the alleged backlog in appointments under the MeECL and the absence of proportionate manner in its functioning which is impacting the people of Garo Hills.
In a memo to Conrad, GSMC chairman, Nikman Ch Marak, pointed out that in the June order for direct appointment to 20 posts in MeECL for the donors of their land, only one community in the state was selected whereas those from Garo Hills, who also gave their plots, did not figure in the recruitment list.
The GSMC also mentioned that recruitment of 52 contractual workers in the same month did not have candidates from the Garo category and has sought a similar number of recruitment under the backlog provision, and went on to mention that recent recruitment for assistant engineer and junior engineer posts also did not follow the status quo — 40/40 state job reservation policy — leading to candidates from the Garo tribe missing out.
“Also, as per the RTI reply from MeECL, there is not a single Garo staff in the offices of the MeECL headquarters and in the event of transfer and posting, category of class III and IV employees from Garo Hills are mostly transferred or posted in Khasi Hills but not vice versa. Equal treatment must be made regardless of all communities,” it said.
