NONGSTOIN: The FKJGP Langpih area unit has strongly opposed the plan of a non-tribal community to set up a separate market in Langpih and sought the intervention of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in the matter.
According to reliable sources, the non-tribals residing at Langpih have planned to open up a separate market near the road to Mawdiangsnam, which goes against the will of the local people.
The FKJGP general secretary, Marbor Nongsiang, said that the intention of setting up a new market will create a great misunderstanding between the locals and the non-tribal community, adding that it is also against the rights of the locals.
The general secretary of FKJGP said that it has also sparked fears in the minds of locals that their business will be captured by outsiders. He added that the intention of opening a new market at Langpih is also to shut down the Langpih market, which is already existent.
The FKJGP further alleged that proposal for setting up the new market is backed by some business tycoons from Assam.
Langpih is a disputed area along the interstate border of Meghalaya and Assam.
