SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has appealed to the people of the State to judiciously exercise their franchise in the upcoming Assembly elections to allow one of the political parties in the State to win the polls with a clear majority and form a stable government.
“For the sake of stability and better governance, I urge the people to give one political party a thumping majority in the upcoming election. If they are not happy with the Congress they can choose any other political party which can serve them in a better manner,” Dr Sangma said during a function here on Friday.
He, however, stated that there is no political party in the State other than the Congress which can deliver as per the expectations of the people.
“I am confident that the people of the State would come out to vote in favour of the Congress. We would easily emerge as the single largest party after the elections in 2013,” a confident Dr Sangma said.
Commenting on reports of other political parties making moves to forge pre-poll alliances, the Chief Minister said this itself is an indication that these parties are not confident enough to fight the election on their own. “The Congress party in the State does not believe in having a pre-poll alliance. We are confident enough to contest on our own,” Dr Sangma said while pointing to his recent interaction with the media wherein he had made it clear that there is no question of having a Congress-NCP alliance in the State.
On the formation of the NPP and the effects it might have on the State’s political scene, Dr Sangma said many new parties have emerged over the years but they have not been able to make any dent in the popularity the Congress party enjoys.
“The Congress would continue to have an upper hand over other political parties in the coming years also,” the Chief Minister added.
