SHILLONG: The office of Hima Sohra on Saturday released a booklet on the life and contributions of Syiem of Hima Sohra Duwansing Syiem.
The booklet titled U Duwansing, u Syiem bakhraw jong ka Hima Sohra bad u khraw pyrkhat jong ka jaitbynriew Khasi was compiled by Secretary of the Hima BV Rymmai.
Rymmai, in a programme held in the premises of the office, said Duwan Sing Syiem was instrumental in uniting Hima Sohra that was previously divided. He also said that Duwan Sing Syiem set the pace for the growth of literature in Sohra.
The booklet contains the life and contributions of the Syiem, his relations with the Britishers during the pre-Independence era and snippets about other Himas.
Rymmai pointed out that Duwan Sing Syiem signed an agreement with the Britishers on September 10, 1829, but did not surrender his freedom to them.
Rymmai said the agreement with the Britishers was made with a motive to protect the Hima Sohra.
Meanwhile, local MLA Gavin Mylliem said that Duwansing Syiem was a chief who wanted to unite the 12 clans in Sohra.
He said that Syiem was a man who chose to use his intellect rather than the sword.
He added that he, in collaboration with Hima Sohra, will ensure that the rich cultural heritage of Sohra is preserved.
