New Delhi: Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday night left for a week-long visit to Canada and Japan as part of a Central delegation of Finance Ministers and officials to study working of Goods and Services Tax (GST) system in those countries.

This is the second overseas tour in six years by the state Finance Ministers to “study” goods and services tax or similar regimes abroad.

The Canadian model seems to have won over the ministers as this will be their second visit to that country. The first visit was in 2006.

Dr Sangma along with other Finance Ministers will participate in several meetings at Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and Tokyo.

The delegation, led by Sushil Kumar Modi, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and Chairman of the Committee, will hold discussions with top Canadian politicians including Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, tax experts, legal luminaries to share their experiences.

The delegation will return on September 25.
