GUWAHATI: An inter-ministerial central delegation will be undertaking a three-day tour of Assam from November 23 to carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the damage caused by the deluge and landslides during the current year.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) additional secretary (mitigation) Sandeep Poundrik will be leading the delegation that will carry out the evaluation in four affected districts.

According to the central delegation’s travel plan, one team will visit Goalpara and Bongaigaon districts while another will tour Nagaon and Hojai districts during the three days.

Between May and October 2020, about 57.89 lakh people in 30 districts of the state were affected by floods. As many as 123 lives were lost in floods while 26 deaths were caused by landslides.

Sources said the decision to undertake the spot assessment tour comes in the wake of submission of the final report on such damage by the Assam government.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) officials, according to reports, will make a video presentation before the central delegation on the damage caused to infrastructure across the state by three waves of floods this year.

Based on the report submitted by the delegation, the central government would take a call on the need to sanction additional financial aid to Assam under the State Disaster Response Fund or National Disaster Response Fund.
