Shillong: Padmashree awardee and Principal of Jyoti Sroat School Bertha G. Dkhar has appealed for an inclusive education for people with disabilities stating that she would continue to fight every day of her life to ensure inclusive education becomes a reality.

Speaking at an interactive invited audience programme ‘A Date With All India Radio’ organized by North Eastern Service of All India Radio, Dkhar said while fighting for inclusive education for people with disabilities, she would also fight for the child’s right.

She also expressed agony over the fact that children were dragged to reach the school in time due to traffic congestion.

“This is not the way to treat the children, as it has a negative effect on the behavior of a child when he grows up later in life”, she said while advocating that children should be treated with respect and dignity.

Bertha G. Dkhar lost her eye sight completely while pursuing her masters in Bangalore.

She came back to Shillong and in spite of everything she tried applying for job but she was denied even for applying for a job in a mainstream school because the people thought that it was not possible for a blind person to work as a teacher.

She also informed that she never got the support the Meghalaya Government when she pioneered the school for the visually impaired, but it was the State Education Department which recommended her name for the Padmashree Award.
