SHILLONG, Nov 25: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawlai Circle, on Wednesday, closed down government offices which were open asserting that they did not honour the festival of the Khasis – Shad Pomblang.
In a statement issued here, the Union said that almost all the banks were functioning including the State Bank of India, ICICI, HDFC, Meghalaya Rural Bank and also the Post Office.
Meanwhile in the city, many banks were closed after police made requests to them in order to avoid confrontation with local tribal youth organisations on account of the festival, Nongkrem Dance.
The banks, which enjoy holidays under Negotiable Instrument Act, are not covered by the holiday notification of the Meghalaya Government.
Only recently, the student body closed down the Ramakrishna Mission-operated youth centre for disrespecting the tribal sentiments.
