SHILLONG, Dec 1: D-Day finally arrived and December 1 seemed to have given a handful of Shillongites the hump, who were penalised for flouting the helmet-wearing rule for pillion riders.
The new rule for pillion riders came into force starting Tuesday, with the Shillong Traffic Police (STP) realising a fine of Rs 54,000 from 54 violators.
Since morning, many pillion riders were seen wearing helmets while those who did not comply with the new rules were compounded by cops in different areas of Shillong.
Taking to Facebook, the STP also gave the thumbs up to Shillongites for conforming to the rule. “Shillong have witnessed the discipline of our two-wheeler riders and pillion riders on Day 1. In this regard, Shillong Traffic Police would like to appreciate and congratulate each and every two-wheeler rider for complying with our request,” the STP said.
With helmets now made mandatory for pillion riders, many shopscontinue to witness good sale of helmets.
An elated Keating Road-based shopkeeper said the move should have been implemented long time ago.
It may be mentioned that the STP has taken the step in its bid to check road fatalities in East Khasi Hills and has vowed of legal action against those who flout the new rule.
