SHILLONG, Dec 11: The streets of Shillong will miss out on the wonted carols, community feasts and cultural programmes during Christmas this year, all thanks to COVID-19.
Christmas celebrations in the city are usually appealing as carols are taken out on the streets of Shillong by different denominations and groups. However, things are bound to be different this time around as the state government has prohibited the activity.
Speaking to journalists after holding COVID-19 review meeting, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, announced that carols will not be allowed on the streets of Shillong this year and will instead take place only within the Church premises.
In addition, the community feasts and different cultural programmes have also been prohibited by the government in view the COVID-19 situation.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA, Ampareen Lyngdoh, has slammed the government for being bewildered about its protocols.
“The government seems to be confused as at one hand, they are announcing protocols and SOPs for festivities and on the other, they are allowing tourists to come in,” Ampareen said.
Stating that the chief minister tested positive for COVID-19 due to constant travelling, Ampareen questioned if the tourists, who will enter the state from December 21, will have to undergo mandatory quarantine for five days.
