Guwahati: Floods continued to create havoc in Assam, though it showed signs of stabilising in some parts even as river water levels remained on a rising trend.
As many as 18 people have been killed in this wave of flood, as per official data, with the highest casualty of five in Tinsukia district and four in Morigaon district. another seven people are reported missing.
Altogether 16 districts have been so far affected in this current wave of flood, the worst hit being Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sonitpur and parts of Jorhat, Kamrup (rural), Baksa, Darrang and Nalbari.
Army, National Disaster Relief Force, Assam State Disaster Relief Force and para-military agencies have been assisting district administrations in carrying out relief and rescue operations.
The Brahmaputra was flowing over the danger level at Jorhat, Tezpur, Guwahati, Dhubri and Goalpara.
Among other major rivers flowing over the red mark are the Subansiri in Lakhimpur, Dhansiri in Golaghat and Jia Bharali in Sonitpur. State Revenue minister Prithi Majhi, Water Resource minister RL Pegu and PWD minister Ajanta Neog, along with the chief secretary and director general of police, on Wednesday made an aerial survey of Majuli, the largest inhabited river island in Jorhat district.
About 200 villages in the island have been submerged, affected over one lakh population. Almost all the Satras (Vashnavite seats of worship and learning) in the island are under water, with Majuli remaining cut off through ferry service for the last several days.
Over 1,900 villages have been affected in the entire state so far, as per official data. Over 17.60 lakh people have been affected in this wave of floods and close to 3.85 lakh people taking shelter in 297 relief camps and 124 shelters in the state. (UNI)
