SHILLONG: While brushing aside the allegations leveled against him, GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma’s lawyer Sujit Dey has asked the State Government to sanction prosecution of Director General (Prisons) Kulbir Krishan.

In a letter to Chief Secretary WMS Pariat, Dey requested the Chief Secretary to grant sanction as early as possible for prosecution of Krishan under various provisions of the law.

Informing this here on Monday, Champion’s lawyer told newsmen that the DG (Prisons) was liable to be prosecuted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Prevention of Corruption Act.

“I have also sent legal notice to DG (Prison) through my lawyer in this connection,” he said.

Dey said he was also contemplating to file a criminal and civil defamation case against Krishan.

Champion lawyer has also favoured for an inquiry by an independent body to probe the bribery allegation levelled against him.

In a report Krishan said Dey had bribed the jailor of Shillong Central Jail Felicita Wahlang so that his client gets a preferential treatment in side the jail.

Terming the allegation as ‘motivated and baseless’, he said, “It is a blatant attempt to damage my reputation.”

Dey also wondered why no FIR was lodged against him if he had committed the crime saying “Police should have lodged an FIR as per Section 149 of the CrPC”. “How this confidential report of Krishan got leaked,” Dey asked.

Meanwhile, Champion’s wife Enritha N Marak has alleged that the allegation against Dey was aimed at diverting attention from the demand for Krishan’s removal.

Marak also said that her husband would never run away from the jail as “he is not a coward”.

The State Chief Secretary, meanwhile, said that government has sought a detailed report from Krishan on the functioning of the Shillong jail vis-à-vis the bribery allegations.

“The government would first examine the report and action will be taken accordingly,” Pariat added.
