Govt not in hurry to aid COVID-hit pvt schools

NONGPOH, Jan 11: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, on Monday, ruled out any hasty move to save the bacon of private schools which were battered due to COVID-19.
“The state government cannot just take a hasty decision but will need to study thoroughly so as to ensure that it does not pave way for repercussions in the future for the students and the education sector as a whole,” Rymbui said during the inauguration of the school building of Umroi Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Umroi.
The education minister also lamented that Meghalaya, in the last few years, has failed to produce IAS and IPS officers.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, Lahkmen Rymbui lauded the vision and efforts of the Managing Committee of the school for setting up this school which has immensely benefitted the students of the area.
The school building has been funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the Supporting Human Capital Development in Meghalaya project.
The inaugural programme was attended by Umroi MLA, George B Lyngdoh, Additional Chief Secretary, DP Wahlang, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, RM Kurbah, Joint Director, Education, Ri Bhoi, VS Nongbet, Executive Engineer, PWD (Building) Shillong, Ransom Sutnga, teachers and principals from other schools of Umroi area besides students and locals.
On the day, the local MLA launched the website of the school (www.up hsssumroi.com) and also handed over a work order of Rs 2 lakh from the MLA Scheme to the school principal. Passed-out SSLC and HSSLC students were also felicitated.
