Govt efforts on to check women, infant mortality rate: Shylla
SHILLONG, Jan 27: Social Welfare Minister, Kyrmen Shylla, on Wednesday said the state government is aware of the high mortality rate of mothers and infants in the state and all efforts are on to scale it down. “We cannot say what steps will be but we are trying our best,” Shylla said, adding “it is not just the Social Welfare department but all the concerned departments who are linked with this”. Accentuating the need to safeguard women and children, Shylla said, “We need cooperation and understanding of all”. “There were a lot of women who did not want to go to the hospitals for delivery during the lockdown due to the fear of COVID-19, and they forced themselves to stay at home,” he informed, adding that this could be also one of the many reasons. Informing that many have understood that it is now safer than before for women to deliver at hospitals, Shylla said, “I request that when it is time to deliver, please go to the nearest hospital or health centre and take advice from the doctor, and do not take chances by doing things on your own”.
