KOHIMA: Responding to the remarks of the Joint Action Committee on Women Reservation (JACWR) with regard to the chief minister’s statements on women reservation, the Naga Peoples Front (NPF) said the statements had been taken ‘out of context and wrongly interpreted’.

The NPF press bureau clarified in a release that the chief minister had appreciated the role and contributions of Naga women in the past decades and had observed that the solution to the problems should be addressed across the table and not with a confrontational attitude on the streets. Moreover, it said the reports that appeared in the media do not give a complete coverage of what the chief minister had said, but was only a brief summary of the lengthy speech which he had delivered. The release further said the party had also made it clear that the issue of women’s reservation was referred to a select committee of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly after Naga civil society and massed-based organisations had opposed the reservation of seats for women in urban civic bodies.
